Buying an Imported Mini Excavator: 8 Things to Check

Most mini excavators sold in Australia under $40,000 are built in China. Plenty are good machines. Some are not, and the difference is usually in the details. Here is what to check before you hand over money, whoever you buy from.
1. Which engine is it, really?
Ask for the engine make and model, not just "diesel". A named engine (Kubota, Laidong, Changchai, Koop) means you can look up the specs and find parts. If a seller cannot tell you, walk away.
2. Can you get parts here?
Ask where filters, hoses, seals, tracks and teeth come from, and how long they take. A local seller holding parts stock is worth more than a cheaper machine with parts on a slow boat.
3. Who honours the warranty?
"2-year warranty" means nothing if the warranty is with a factory overseas. Ask who pays for repairs in Australia, who does the work, and whether you can use your own mechanic. Get it in writing. Ours is on our warranty page.
4. Ask for the compliance paperwork
Ask for the manufacturer's declaration of compliance with AS/ISO 20474.1, the earth-moving machinery safety standard, and check the machine has a ROPS canopy or cab. Every machine should also have a permanent metal nameplate with the model, serial number, year and operating weight.
5. What is in the price?
Quick hitch, buckets, ripper, auger? Or just one bucket? Compare like with like. Our range ships with the full attachment bundle.
6. See it start and run
Before you pay the balance, see the machine start from cold, track both ways, slew, and run every hydraulic function. If you cannot get there in person, ask for a video of that machine (serial number in shot) doing exactly that.
7. How does it get to you?
Get the freight in writing before you commit, not after. Ask whether it comes to your door or you collect it from a depot. Our freight checker gives you a number by postcode.
8. Is there a real business behind it?
Look for an ABN, a street address you can visit, reviews from real buyers, and someone who answers the phone. Our yard is at Arana Hills in Brisbane, and you can book a time to see the machines.
